Santa Clara, Calif., Tuesday, April 24, 2012 -- Capella Microsystems, Inc. is pleased to announce its selection as a Co-engineering partner for Ambient Light Sensors for Windows 8. An Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) manages display brightness under varying lighting conditions thereby reducing eye strain, improving contrast and legibility, and optimizing power consumption. With these benefits, the ALS has become a desirable component in many applications such as smartphones, tablets, personal computers, portable game systems, and televisions.
Capella’s ALS products incorporate Capella's patented Filtron™ technology which eliminates the need for external optical filters for ambient light sensing. Filtron™ allows the closest ambient light spectral sensitivity to real human eye responses and offers the best background light cancellation capability (including sunlight) without utilization of the microcontroller’s resources. Other leading features of Capella’s sensors are their high ALS sensitivity under low lux conditions and through a dark cover lens, and tight ALS output tolerance which translates to consistent performance after assembly. “These attributes were important for Capella to meet the requirements of Windows 8”, said Dr. Cheng-chung Shih, President and CEO of Capella Microsystems, Inc. “Ambient Light Sensors will contribute to the green initiative by reducing power consumption and allow for more light aware applications to take advantage of optical sensor technology.”
This news announcement follows Capella’s recent press release of its CM36262 smart optical lid sensor which is the first optical solution that allows a touch screen to distinguish the shadow of a closed lid (or fabric cover) from the shadow of a user's hand. This distinction allows the touch screen to power down when a lid is closed, but to stay powered as a hand holds the screen and hovers to make selections. The new chip has the sensitivity and intelligence to recognize a hand from the ability of human skin to transmit an infrared light beam whereas a lid or fabric cover is opaque.
